Where’s that music coming from? Artology has been quietly chipping away over the past month, finalising the fanfares, Art Gallery events and organising new projects!
Fanfare Recording Day was held September 15, at Trackdown Studio with the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO). The live recording session is always our favourite day, hearing eight new works by these amazing young people come to life. We can’t wait to hear the final edits in mid-October. Daniel Carter returned to Australia to conduct the AYO’s Momentum Ensemble for the Fanfare recording session. He also worked with the orchestra on a recently commissioned work Aven Asperitas, a collaboration with composer Lachlan Skipworth and photographer Greg Barrett. We were fortunate enough to attend the premiere performance. What a terrific introduction for the young composers!
Art Gallery Society of NSW, Resonate Series featured David Lunn, a 2018 Fanfare composer, and his work Stops and Starts on September 15. The concert included a duo performance with one of Australia’s favourite sopranos, Greta Bradman, and ARIA Award-winning pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska, performing uplifting songs from around the world. Daniel Duque is finalising the sound design for April Aardvark, a forthcoming production from the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP). Daniel has been working with mentor Steve Francis, who invited him to attend the opening night of the Sydney Theatre Company’s production The Real Thing, to give Daniel an understanding and ideas for writing music for stage. Can’t wait to see April Aardvard ! The season runs October 18—26 at SBW Stables Theatre, Kings Cross.
Extended Play Festival of New Music, co-produced by City Recital Hall and Artology mentor composer Lyle Chan, has set a new world record for the longest performance (7 hours!) of Terry Riley’s classic In C. It was awesome to have Fanfare participants – past, present and family! – kick off the performance and make history.
