2021 is well underway and with a sense of optimism and excitement for a new year and new experiences. We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2021 Fanfare Competition. Along with our partners at the Australian Youth Orchestra, we are excited to be joining forces with the Queensland and Sydney Youth Orchestras for more performances. We’re offering mentorships for theatre sound design or create a soundscape for a tabletop gaming app. Plus a new initiative for any film buffs to create a short and sweet 2-5 minute film.

Fanfares to replace the cue bells! 8 young composers will be selected to participate in workshops and attend a live recording session with the Australian Youth Orchestra at Trackdown Studios. The fanfares are broadcast at venues across Australia including City Recital Hall (NSW), Adelaide Festival Centre (SA), Queensland Performing Arts Centre (Qld), Ian Potter Centre, Southbank (Vic) and Theatre North at The Princess (Tas). Submit your application online by 31 May.

Open Fanfare! 16 young composers will be selected to have their composition performed in concert with the Sydney Youth Orchestras and the Queensland Youth Chamber Orchestra. They attend workshop sessions with our mentors, an orchestral rehearsal and the concert event at either the Queensland Performing Arts Centre or the Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music! Enter the Fanfare Competition by 31 May, apply for both in one easy application form.

All successful Fanfare applicants are considered for two additional prizes!

1. Music and Gaming Mentorship! Create a soundscape for the tabletop gaming app Syrinscape. The selected participant will work with program creator Benjamin Loomes to develop a soundscape (both music and sound effects) which will be available as official content for gamers all around the world within the Syrinscape app! Check out Syrinscape website.

2. Australian Theatre for Young People Sound Design Mentorship! Create the sound design with mentor Steve Francis and the ATYP team for the production of Shack – Antarctica, a blizzard – eight school kids are stranded in a shack, on the bottom of the world, with a sinister force circling outside. The production runs at the Stables Theatre, Sydney, Oct-Nov 2021.
