To get a chance to hear the judges talk about what makes a successful fanfare before you finalise and submit your entry, register for our free online Q&A Session on Saturday 15 May, 10am. Our mentors will offer advice on your piece and you can play your piece, share screens and ask questions. If you can’t attend you are welcome to email your queries. Fanfare asks young people aged 12-21 years to create a short 30 second composition. Submit your score, favourite four bars and a sound file. You could be one of 24 people to have their piece played by a real orchestra, work with leading conductors, professional mentors and…

  • Attend a live studio recording with the Australian Youth Orchestra and have your piece broadcast at renowned venues across Australia.
  • Performed in concert with the Queensland Youth Orchestras or the Sydney Youth Orchestras.

Plus two additional mentorships:

  • Create the sound design with Steve Francis and the Australian Theatre for Young People for the production Shack – Antarctica.
  • Or work with Ben Loomes to create a soundscape for table top gaming app Syrinscape for people around the world to download!

How do I start my composition?

Listen to lots of music. Start writing down your ideas. Create a simply rhythm and build in harmonies. Select your instruments. There are lots of free musical platforms and notation software to help you get started. If you need help with orchestration check out our Orchestration resource.
