Annabel Wouters (Age 14, NSW)
FANFARE: With Bated Breath
My name is Annabel Wouters, and I am 14 years old. I come from Wollongong, NSW. Music has always been a huge part of my life, and I was lucky enough to be born into a musical family: my mother is a flute teacher, and my father repairs musical instruments. Because of this, I was able to start enjoying music from a very early age. I started the piano when I was in kindergarten, and then picked up flute halfway through year one. Since then, I have always enjoyed performing and competing in eisteddfods.
In 2019, I was selected to perform as a flute soloist at the Sydney Town Hall for the Arts Unit Choral Festival. In the same year, I also got to perform at the Sydney Opera House in the State Junior Wind Band. I have attended the State Music Camps almost every year, and they are always one of the highlights of my year. This year, I have been selected to play in the Senior State Wind Band, played as 2nd flute in the Senior State Music Camp Symphony Orchestra, and even got the opportunity to play on the radio. I was also asked to play at the “Stars of the Shoalhaven Eisteddfods” Concert, and the “Highlights of the Wollongong Eisteddfods” Concert. I am currently a part of the BlueScope Orchestra and Friday Night Camarata Group at the WollCon. I have always enjoyed composing, composing my first piece at the age of 7, and I am so excited to be able to have my piece performed.
Composition Inspiration:
My composition is inspired by the music featured in the movie, “The Imitation Game”. The music from this movie often features patterns, or ostinatos that are repeated consistently throughout the piece. I took on this kind of idea by making patterns throughout my piece. The music also has a beautiful, almost victorious melody, and the melody in my own piece is inspired by these.
