Artology is excited to be part of @janetlaurence ‘s project REQUIEM and supporting a new commission by @williambartondidge and @veroniquesworld . REQUIEM will be presented as part of the 2021 @sydney_festival at the Paddington Reservoir Gardens.
⠀
Janet Laurence is the creative director of REQUIEM in the Paddington Reservoir Gardens, which asks “how do we mourn and remember the inestimable loss - of animals, of flora, of ecological worlds - wrought by the black summer fires of 2019-2020?” ⠀
⠀
REQUIEM will weave together visual art, music, poetry, performance, literature, science, philosophy and environmental advocacy within the ethereal inner chamber of the Paddington Reservoir in January 2021. The installations and events will return us to an aesthetics of care and healing such that we might cultivate a renewed commitment to our precious Australian landscape. ⠀
⠀
Janet has partnered with an amazing group of people to deliver this cross-disciplinary program, including the Sydney Environment Institute, Sydney Festival, Artology supporting William Barton and Véronique Serret, City of Sydney, Groundswell, @redroompoetry , Juz Kitson, Yasmin Smith, Alanna Irwin and many others. See the full program on the Sydney Festival website.

Last Saturday 8 fanfares were recorded at @trackdo Last Saturday 8 fanfares were recorded at @trackdownstudios with the @australianyouthorchestra conducted by Matthew Coorey. Due to the restrictions 4 composers accessed via zoom and 4 in the studio. The orchestra had a terrific sound with the condensed ensemble and the composers worked brilliantly to adapt their works. Our engineer for the day was Jim Atkins and we are looking forward to hearing the recordings in the coming weeks. The fanfares will be broadcast in 2021 at @atqpac @cityrecitalhall @adelaidefescent @perthconcerthall @princesstheatrelaunceston and Ian Potter Southbank Centre @unimelb 👏👏👏

Leta says, ‘I think 2020 has made us realise, even more than ever, the importance of all forms of storytelling. As a writer, of course I love the written word, but I’ve been reminded this year just how powerful film can be. I’m not a film maker by any means, nor are any of my friends and family, but the cameras on our phones have been working overtime making very short films as a way of keeping in touch with each other during lockdown and border closures. Lots of good things have come out of this very strange time we’re all going through, and the Very Short Film Festival is one of them - I’m thrilled to be involved in it, and am so looking forward to the stories that come out of it.’

We are so extremely fortunate to have actress Mart We are so extremely fortunate to have actress Marta Dusseldorp as a judge for our brand new Very Short Film Festival. She say, ‘The ability to tell a story in two to five minutes is incredibly difficult, but not impossible. Like 2020, this is a time to discover another way to look at things. The world, the tiny moments that make us human, that connect us. I am thrilled to be on the panel of this unique and superbly situated @springbaymill @veryshortfilmfestival . So now is the time to grab your phone or your “old fashioned” camera, your mother or your best friend, and share with us your story, as you want to tell it. We dare you.’

The Long and the Short of a New Short Film Festiva The Long and the Short of a New Short Film Festival: Artology, @springbaymill and @guardianaustralia are delighted to announce the launch of the inaugural @veryshortfilmfestival

Not a short festival but a festival showcasing short films – of two to five minutes. The Very Short Film Festival is a national competition that has sprung out of the world we’re currently living in, and is open to anyone who’s ready to tell a story. There are no real rules of what that story might be or how it’s told – that’s purely up to entrants. The only stipulation is that Tasmania needs to sneak in somewhere.

The mentors and judges are award-winning actress Marta Dusseldorp who has worked extensively in theatre, film and television; artist Rocco Fazzari, well-known for his cartoons and illustrations in the Fairfax press; writer and editor Leta Keens; and Leah Purcell, one of Australia’s most eminent cultural figures.

Cash prizes for winning entrants will be awarded in two categories – 21 years of age and under; 22 years and over. On top of that, the Very Short Film Festival will be holding Q&A sessions and masterclasses, and offering a number of mentorships.

Shortlisted films can be viewed from 1 May at The Guardian and the winners announced at a special ceremony on Friday 21 May 2021 at Spring Bay Mill.

Entries are now open: veryshortfilmfestival.com.au
